This traditional farmhouse, built in thick massive walls made of clay bricks bound together through traditional lime-based mortars, housed a multi-purpose programme for a large property dedicated to cork and cattle: 3 small apartments for workers, large storage areas for crops and cow feed, and a traditional Portuguese timber oven.

The building refurbishment had two main objectives in mind: The renovation of the building respecting the traditional materials, their technical requirements and visual coherency, and the conversion of the programme into a contemporary family home. These may seem contradictory, but are possible through the respect for the traditional, the understanding of the limits and use of each material, and the context of their application.

The result is a fluid, clean, contemporary refurbishment where light plays a crucial role in the atmosphere that has been sculpted into this design.
